The series is written and executive produced by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, based on the critically acclaimed video game of the same name, which was developed by Naughty Dog for the PlayStation consoles.
“The Last of Us” had a record-breaking first season, becoming the most-watched debut season of a series ever for HBO. Series co-creators and showrunners Mazin and Druckmann confirmed to Deadline that the show is being planned for at least four seasons at HBO.
“We don’t think that we’re going to be able to tell the story even within two seasons [2 and 3] because we’re taking our time and go down interesting pathways which we did a little bit in Season 1 too,” Mazin said. “We feel like it’s almost assuredly going to be the case that — as long as people keep watching and we can keep making more television — Season 3 will be significantly larger. And indeed, the story may require Season 4.”
“The Last of Us” has already been greenlit for a third season at the network.
The Max sizzle reel also teased first looks at “The White Lotus” Season 3 and “It” prequel series “Welcome to Derry.” Anthology series “The White Lotus” will be set in Thailand and stars Carrie Coon, Walton Goggins, Parker Posey, Leslie Bibb, and Jason Isaacs. Natasha Rothwell also returns from Season 1. “The White Lotus” Season 3 will also premiere in 2025.
